Curtain Headings | What Are Pinch Pleats?

Curtain headings are often described as the finisher to a room. All the hard work of painting, furnishing, and flooring can be undone in a heartbeat with a pair of cheap curtain headings. Because of this, it’s always a good idea to invest in the best pair you can afford.

A bespoke pair of curtains will last much longer than an off the shelf pair, they won’t fade when exposed to the sun and will be worth maintaining. For instance, if they become damaged or ripped, it will be more affordable to repair the curtains rather than replace them.

Think of bespoke curtains as an investment more than a simple piece of fabric. They are also not as expensive as many people believe. So it’s well worth obtaining a quote from a professional curtain fitter, here at Scotts Interiors, before just assuming a pre-made pair will be a cost-effective option.

To ensure your curtains are a great match for your interior design, you need to choose the right heading and one of the best bespoke curtains headings is pinch pleats.

What is a Pinch Pleat?

While there are many styles of curtains available, this blog will focus on one of the most luxurious: the pinch pleat. The pinch pleat is an intricate style of curtain and is similar in design to the pencil pleat, probably the most common style of curtain.

However, where the pencil pleat is the “standard” way of hanging curtains the pinch pleat uses more fabric and creates a fuller, more decorative look. Suitable for all fabrics, the pleats are sewn in and permanently fixed which creates the impression of a tailored, luxury finish. Pair the pinch pleat design with thicker material for the best look.

Within the pinch pleat style, there are two different variations: the double or triple pinch. The double is recommended if you want a patterned curtain as less of the pattern becomes lost in the pinch. The triple is suitable for plain coloured fabric and looks even more tailored than the double pinch, creating a more elegant finish. The triple can be used with a patterned material but the risk is that the pattern will look distorted at the top of the curtain. Both types of pinch can be hung on a standard curtain pole or track, but they will need specific pin style hooks to hang them.

When ordering your pinch pleat curtains it’s very important to measure and quote the accurate width of your curtain pole/track. This will allow professional designers, here at Scotts Interiors, to be able to pleat the material accurately while ensuring the curtains are the correct width. An incorrect measurement may mean that when the pinch is applied the curtains will be too short for the pole.
